Believe!
By Chance Massaro & Steve Wallis
The Science of Belief
It's in both religious and scientific texts: Belief is what you know is true, or possible. Your beliefs are your life. We see what we believe. For example, you can score higher on an intelligence test if you simply pretend you are an Einstein.
Psychologically, beliefs can be installed very quickly. If someone is helpful, you believe that they are nice. Research shows that smiling and looking on the bright side of life will help you feel happier. For example, if everyone says it's bad luck to walk under a ladder, you will tend to have bad experiences around ladders. Knowing that it is possible to shape our own beliefs is a very powerful tool for self-development.
The Story of Chance's Life
Until the age of three, I was raised by a single mother. Mom's modus operandi could be captured in the phrase "service to others." Even at that very young age, I saw many examples of her helping other people. Because of this early imprinting, it's really easy for me to think of others and what I may do for them. As a consultant and trainer, I am successful because I consistently help people believe in their own ability and self-worth.
People often hire me because things are not working well in their organization. When I first meet them, I listen for indications of their strengths; everyone has many strengths. I then give those signs back to them by saying, essentially, "You are strong (or creative or caring – whatever is true) and you can do this." People believe me and consistently go on to improve their lives.
Believing With Others
Note places in your day-to-day life where people ritualize a positive belief system. What do you say when your team launches a new product or service? What are the standard opening ceremonies of your office? The ritual ceremonies at these events signify that particular actions will follow – and those actions will produce positive results.
You can tap into this powerful force. All you need to do is create some simple rituals – they might be just a few words to use every time you and your coworkers sit down for a meeting. By the time these rituals become a habit you will have amazing results.
